Pete’s Picks Shelter Dog Training Program
The APA has recently implemented a formal training program for dogs who need a little extra TLC. Staff and volunteers are now teaching basic obedience, like sit and stay, as well as good leash walking.
Pete’s Picks was inspired by Pete, a Corgi mix who came to the APA in September 2008. He was very timid and not socialized. He cowered around people and wasn’t adapting well to being in the shelter. We realized that we needed to do something to help him get adopted.
After a few weeks of training and behavior modification, Pete made huge strides. He was happier in the shelter and won the hearts of a very loving family who decided to make him a permanent part of their family.
If the staff or volunteers observe dogs in need of additional training or socialization, they are able to address those issues specifically and work with the dogs to make them more adoptable. |
