Meet the King & Queen Candidates |

Our primary mission at the Animal Protective Association is "bringing people and pets together." We fulfill this mission each day, caring for the wonderful animals in our shelter and working with adopters to help them find their new best friend. We love to see these happy people and pets start their lives together and we are thrilled when adopters stay in touch with us after the adoption to share their stories of success. In celebration of 90 years of bringing people and pets together, we have asked six of these adopters to share their stories so we can honor them as candidates for the King & Queen of the APA’s 22nd Annual Canine Carnival.
We think you will be touched by their stories and invite you to vote for the King and Queen of the APA’s 22nd Annual Canine Carnival. Then, on Sunday, October 7th, come to the coronation at the APA’s Canine Carnival at Tilles Park in Ladue, where all of the contestants will appear at 12:00 noon on the Canine Carnival main stage. After the ceremony, you are invited to stroll through the park with your own dog in the Pooch Parade led by KSDK’s Jennifer Blome and the canine royalty.

MANDY: Mandy is a 12 year old German Shepherd mix. I saw Mandy on TV almost one year ago when she was the “Monday Mascot” on KPLR 11 News. We drove to the APA the next day and came home with Mandy; a very enjoyable and pleasant process to adopt, as I found out. Mandy is such a wonderful dog and she loves everyone and other animals. She is full of pep for a senior dog. Mandy and I and the grandkids enjoy taking long hikes, going to the playgrounds, and just being with family. We take walks every morning. As I said, Mandy and I are both seniors, Mandy at 12 and me at nearly 65. As a Vietnam veteran I was being treated for cancer at the V.A. hospital in Columbia. Mandy has lifted my spirits completely and helped me get well and back in shape with our hikes and daily walks. She has been the best medicine possible for me and I think we have helped each other a lot. We are both doing great now. Adopting Mandy from the APA was one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is such a good dog! |

DINKY: After losing our rescued shih tzu in December, 2011, we were finally ready to let love back in our hearts. On April 6, we walked into the APA to take a look. We had visited with a couple of beautiful dogs, but hadn’t yet felt the heartstrings tug. As we were meandering, a staff member stopped us and asked if we were looking for a small dog. We said yes, and she said she had just the one. Enter Dinky. A bundle of quirky sweetness that we knew we wanted in our lives upon first sight. Everyone at the APA was thrilled to see Dinky get her forever home. They came to say goodbye to her and to wish us well. I was moved to tears. Dinky entered our house and made it hers. She makes us laugh, she makes us cry with happiness, she listens to everything I say with rapt attention. She has made this house once again a home. I have discovered that one pet can never replace another, but Dinky has come into our lives and placed her love deep within our hearts. We are forever grateful to the wonderful staff and volunteers at the APA. |

PRINCESS: Make Princess a queen!!! Adopting Princess is the best choice I could have made and the APA is a blessing to me. She has enriched my life and I'm lucky to read in her actions that she loves her new life...especially her new mommy. :) After college I developed a medical condition that causes a lot of pain and sadness in my life. Not only does Princess bring me joy with her sweet playfulness, but no matter how sick I feel I always get up to take care of her needs, including just to play. At the same time, my baby loves to cuddle with mommy on the couch/bed which is very comforting. The love I feel from her amplifies the love I feel in return. We are perfect for each other. She needed a loving, attentive home where she could be the princess she was meant to be, and I needed her love and something to take care of and focus on. She deserves to be queen because as much as my goal was to give a puppy a good home, Princess has done so much in return for me, to enrich the disabled life I've been thrust into. |

BENNETT: This is Bennett, he was given up because he was “too hyper”. All he needed was a family where he would get exercised and played with. At our house we think that bird dogs should be out running fields, not in a kennel. Bennett and his “sister” enjoy taking daily 5 mile walks and running the state’s conservation lands. Adding Bennett to our family helped greatly with bringing our other German Shorthair out of her shell. She is much less timid, and eagerly goes outside to play with him. He is also a huge love bug. He can’t get enough of anyone petting or touching him, and no matter how bad a day you may have had, he is always there with a wagging stump and happy eyes to say hello. The APA was excellent with helping us adopt him. I went to visit him the first day he was on the floor, and visited the rest of the week until we were able to bring our other GSP up for a visit. After a brief meeting with our dog, he was on his way home with us to enjoy a life he could have only dreamed of |

MCCOY: My dog McCoy means the world to me. I had begged my parents for a dog ever since I can remember. Their response was always “no”. My dad would say jokingly, “if you get a goal in soccer, I will get you a dog”. Well, it finally happened. During my 2010 season, I finally got that goal. Unfortunately, I did not get my dog right away. In fact, a few months went by and no dog. On Christmas day I came out to open presents and found a stuffed dog with a note on it from “Santa” telling me that we would go look for a real dog. The following day we went to the APA. Immediately, I spotted the sweetest dog but another family was with him. We spent time with a few dogs but none seemed to fit. As the APA was about to close, my sister noticed that the dog we first noticed was still there. The family didn’t adopt him. I fell in love immediately and that night we introduced McCoy to the rest of our family. He has been a true blessing to me and my family and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. |

OSHIE: Well, where to start with my wonderful friend Oshie. It could be a long story but I will make it short and sweet. I had been looking off and on for a dog companion since I was retiring. One day, there he was, this peculiar looking dog on the APA web site. I just had to see him in person and it was love at first sight! Oshie has proven to be a great friend and companion to me and my wife. All three of us were new to each other because I also got married the year I got Oshie (yahoo)! How many can make that wonderful claim! My experience with the APA was just plain magical. The staff was so friendly and all liked Oshie and were glad he was adopted! Oshie was the dog I was looking for-- funny, strong, smart, happy, and most of all very protective. Oshie really loves belly rubs. Oshie is truly a ham, knowing when to show off when company comes around. He wows them with his tail wag (which wags his rear end at the same time)! So vote for Oshie - he’s the dog! OSHIE (Boxer-American Bulldog) WOOF WOOF |
