Crosby is special to me because in many ways he is NOT the king in the house. The pharaoh-hound mix was dumped in the deep-woods of Washington Missouri where we found him very sick and infested. We have no way of knowing how long he had survived on his own, but even with his rough beginning, Crosby was never a dog to put himself first. Many times we joke that Crosby is a martyr because he puts up with our rambunctious 3 year old and any other "baby monster" put his way. His charismatic disposition makes him a perfect nominee.

I rescued Dodgy off of craigslist. He was underweight, had worms, and mange. I worked with the vet for about six months and we finally got rid of it. Even through all of the medication and losing all of his hair in the winter, Dodgy was a sweet bundle of unconditional love. I don't know that there is anything more satisfying than saving a life, and Dodgy certainly doesn't let it go unrewarded.

Mitch was a rescue dog from Memphis, TN who had heartworms and went through two months of treatment before we could go pick him up and bring him to his "real forever home!" He is so loving and healthy now; he is truly a part of our family. Mitch fell in love with us and we have fallen in love with him! He is the spunkiest little guy on the block. Everyone knows him by his red rubber ball he carries with him everywhere!! He is truly a king in our eyes and always will be! Just look at him!

As for so many rescues, Ethyl came to me in a very fragile state. She was afraid of anything and everything. With her tail tight between her legs she continued to live in her terrified world for a year and a half.. It was just months ago that she would take a treat from my hand and it was just a few weeks ago that she came up to me to be pet. When I saw her come to me for the first time, I felt as she had finally conquered her inner fears and has decided to trust me.

Our dog Frances deserves to be Queen of the APA Carnival for many reasons, but chief among them is her ability to weather adversity. She has suffered several traumas: giardia, a broken paw, spinal disc rupture and now, worst of all, a human baby brother. Her patience is divine, with his hair pulling and attention grabbing ways. She could really use a pick me up of attention all for only her and the Queen of Carnival is just the ticket!

We got Goldie from the APA on February 19, 2005. She was 8 months old. Earlier that week we had found out we were pregnant for the first time. Unfortunately, that pregnancy had complications and did not survive. But Goldie was there with us throughout it all.
Goldie is our first child; four-legged, furry and with an undying desire to roll in dead worms – but she is ours. This year Goldie became the proud big sister to our first human child, Miles. Goldie is a special member of our family. She brings us joy, laughter and comfort.
