1. Check IMMEDIATELY for your lost pet by calling AND visiting local shelters and animal control. Take along a photo of your pet and leave a written description. Remember most pets are lost for 1-3 weeks and are usually within a 3-5 block area. Check back within 3 days; most shelters and animal controls don’t have the space to hold an animal for longer than the 5 days required by law.
2. KEEP CHECKING. Sometimes well meaning individuals hold a pet for several days before reporting or surrendering the animal to a shelter or animal control.
3. NEVER leave your pet outside unattended. Contact your local law enforcement if you believe your animal to be stolen and check with police and sheriff's offices to check with local animal control approach.
4. Advertise in newspapers and check found sections daily. (Many papers, including the Post-Dispatch, carry a free "found" section).
5. Put up signs and posters with pet description and a contact number at local stores and vet clinics. Tell local children, post office delivery and neighbors that you have lost your pet.
6. Keep ID's current on all of your pets (cats too), including rabies tags, which are easily traced by animal control facilities.
7. Check online. Many shelters also have websites with lost and found information.

Reminder when turning in a stray animal, some facilities surrender strays to city/county animal control.  Check the facilities' policies before surrendering.
